How the VA Referral Process Works

  1. Find an in-network provider. You can search the VA’s locator yourself, or ask your VA health care team to find one for you.
  2. Get a referral. Ask your VA health care team for a referral to us. VA checks that you’re eligible. Then they contact you to confirm the type of care you need. This part can take up to 14 days.
  3. Schedule your visit. You can call us yourself, or ask your VA team to schedule for you. If you book it yourself, tell your VA team within 14 days.
  4. Watch for your authorization letter. VA sends it after you schedule. This letter is your approval for community care. Make sure you have it before your first visit.
  5. Come to your appointment. VA shares your medical records with us. Bring copies of any images, like CT scans or MRIs, that we ask you to bring.
  6. Keep track of your visits. Your letter says how long you’re approved for care. VA won’t cover services your letter doesn’t include.
  7. Ask for a new referral if you need more care. You or our office can request one.

What’s in Your Authorization Letter

Your letter shows four things:

  • An authorization number
  • Your approved community provider
  • A description of the care you can get
  • How long you can keep getting care before you need a new referral

What to Have Ready When You Call

  • Your authorization letter

How to Find Us on the VA Locator
